by Dr. Dee Ray, University of North Texas
Play Therapy
PlayTherapy is a research based sys-tematic strategy used by play therapists to help children ages 3 to 12 process their psychosocial problems. Children often compensate and deal with their emotions by using their own coping skills, albeit immature. The result, misbehavior, acting-out and anxiety. With play therapy, the specifically seleted toys become their words and the play is their language.
Children will play out themes of loss, revenge, power or mastery until they no longer have to. They express their feelings and begin to heal. Although play therapy is widely used with children, it also benefits teens and adults.
